Crèche Open Day Feb 22nd

On the 22nd Feb 14 we are going to be holding our 4th public openday in the ‘Creche du Bois Gentil’ meaning friendly forest kiwi creche in Atarau. This will be the 4th season the creche has been used to temporarily raise young roroa chicks (taken as eggs) before they return to the wilds of the Paparoa Range. The public is welcome to come along to this event once more to participate in a roroa chick release. Click here to see the invitation.

There is currently 5 new young kiwi chicks in the creche with another due to arrive on the 22nd for the openday. There is also an additional 3 eggs at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch that will come over once hatched.

As well as this the Trust is advancing its planning for a large stoat control project due to commence later in the year. This will be the first stage of an ecosystem wide protection project that will become the main focus of the PWT’s work once we have scaled back Operation Nest Egg and intensive monitoring of kiwi.

On the rivers an additional 4 young whio blue duck have just been released into the Moonlight and Roaring meg rivers bringing the known population in these rivers to 15 individuals (up from 3 when we first started in 2006).
